Hed Kandi Serve Chilled 2008
Hed Kandi Serve Chilled 2008
Description:
As refreshing as a cool breeze at Pimms o'clock, Hed Kandi's Serve Chilled returns in all its hazy summer splendour: two CDs courting an ace down-tempo groove, dabbling in lounge, soulful jazz, nu-beats, Balearic electronica, funk and chilled Latin. With Hed Kandi currently seeded no.1 in the world of compilations, Serve Chilled has this year's advantage when it comes to soundtracking the most exquisite summer chilling.
Disc one of this edition of Serve Chilled is a bit like catching up with old friends. It opens with a symphonic soar and the welcome return of Groove Armada (their last Kandi outing was way back on Disco Kandi 2006.) Their track, Paris, delivers some seriously good strings and a heart-wrenching vocal. Samantha James, another firm friend of Kandi brings a typically gorgeous slice of Om loveliness with Right Now, then there's a new Claes Rosen reworking of HK's era-defining big hitter, Put 'Em High from StoneBridge ft Therese. We take in a detour to Germany to join Moon and Benk for some Pimp My Style jazzy-loungerie and there's a great reworking of Jose Gonzalez, here stripped of his signature percussive pizzicato plucking and given a lighter more epic nu-jazz feel by the Swedish producer Beatfanatic.
The second set begins with Charles Webster's Furry Phreaks ft. Terra Diva, All Over The World featured here in its ambient guise (though this is possibly the most remixed record on any HK compilation ever!). Ex-Cafe Mambo resident Pete Gooding and Steve Miller (or Afterlife to those of you in the HK know) join forces here once more as No Logo with their track Mindset, some of the lightest, jazziest drum and bass you can lay yours hands on. Two female icons are nestled up against one another: firstly there's the late, great Nina Simone covering The Beatles Here Comes The Sun with Francois K on the remix (how’s that for a line-up?) Then there's Jody Whatley covering the Chic classic I Want Your Love with DJ legend Danny Krivit on the re-edit. UK soul maestros Reel People return to HK with a typically groovesome track, Amazing, taken from their follow-up album 7 Ways To Wonder, featuring the vocals of Incognito's Tony Momrelle and Imaani. 4Hero serve up their track Look Inside bringing their signature effervescent sound which just oozes summer. Ralph Myerz' My Darling is a beguiling example of Norwegian melancholic pop-electronica, with hip-hop beats and sugar sweet vocals from Christine Sandtorv whilst Chaz Jankel (yes, he of Blockhead-ed legend) gets the Todd Terje touch on Glad To Know You. With such a smashing slice of pure summer sounds on this edition of Serve Chilled, it's game, set and match Hed Kandi! from www.hedkandi.com
